Cycling Day 35 – Gualala to Jenner

We left Gualala State Park this morning having had the raccoons and camp next to us keep us awake a little bit throughout the night.  There was a bit of a trek to get back out to he main road then we set off for Fort Ross Historic State Park, our intended destination for the evening.  We’d already taken note that there wasn’t much in terms of grocery stores or Read More...

Cycling Day 34 – Mendocino to Gualala

Having decided on leaving the route to cycle the Napa Valley we set our sights on the awesomely named Gualala. This was another longish ride, particularly after we’d climbed over Leggett the previous day, but we were both feeling surprisingly fresh and this fitted best with Napa. We were on the road by ten and I was armed with a new rear tyre. The replacement (Specialised Infinty Sport 1.75) wasn’t Read More...

Cycling Day 33 – Leggett to Mendocino

I managed to convince Andy to get out of bed early this morning for an intended 7am start so we could avoid the traffic on CA1 – the main coastal route in Northern California.  The first climb and descent out of Leggett are notorious on the Pacific Coast cycling route for being difficult, having no shoulder and therefore forcing you to ride in the same (and only) lane for cars, Read More...

Cycling Day 32 – Weott to Leggett

Wow, what an eventful day.  Given that we didn’t have time yesterday, I opted to get up early so that I could go and see the old trees area in Rockefeller forest.  This meant going back along Avenue of the Giants and then taking a turnoff to the west.  I made a brief enquiry to Andy but he opted for the relaxation of a couple more hours of sleep.  I Read More...

Cycling day 31 – Eureka to Weott

After our last ride we decided to quickly check in and then check out Eureka’s Lost Coast Brewery. We bumped into fellow cyclists Josh & Johnnie and heavily sampled the local brews – we were the last to leave so we were glad we’d already decided to have a rest/hangover day. We’d planned to get some shopping in on this rest day but there was still a bit to do Read More...

Cycling Day 30 – Patrick Point to Eureka

After yesterdays longer than planned ride we didn’t have far to go to get to Eureka. This was pretty handy as we’d had indulged in a few beers with some fellow campers the night before. We left Patrick Point State Park about lunchtime and rode into Trinidad for some breakfast. It was a pretty cold and misty day so we didn’t hang around. We’d been told we should check out Read More...

Cycling Day 29 – Mill Creek to Patrick’s Point

This morning we made the somewhat steep climb back out of the state park, through the misty and quite eerie forest.  It felt a bit like a scene out of a fantasy movie.  We left at the same time as Johnnie and Josh who were headed in the same direction.  We had a pretty long chat to these guys last night and agreed that we’d head for the same state Read More...
