Cycling Day 54 – Huntington Beach to Dana Point

We started off from the motel this morning about 5 miles off route along Beach Boulevard.  This was quite a busy road with no bike lane so we took a slight detour to get onto an empty road all the way to the beach.  We got onto yet another bike track going along the beach when we stopped as Andy was having some trouble with his contact lenses.  While these Read More...

Video Blog 9 – Crossing the Golden Gate Bridge

San Francisco was a big milestone for us in our trip and it all began with us crossing the iconic Golden Gate Bridge.  We were on the west side which meant lest pedestrians to avoid but not quite as good a view of the bay area with Alcatraz on the left.  This happened on day 39 of our cycling trip on our way in from Petaluma.

Cycling Day 53 – Santa Monica to Huntington Beach

Having had a few days off in Los Angeles to celebrate my 21st birthday (cough :D) we left our awesome hosts bound for Huntingdon Beach. We cycled back towards the ocean and re-joined the route at Venice Beach. We decided to switch on the GoPro on time lapse mode today –  it captures a picture every few seconds. You’ll be glad to know we’re converting this to a video so Read More...

Cycling Day 52 – Leo Carrillo to Santa Monica

After our rest day on the beach yesterday, we had a roughly average day in store today of about 60 km to take us into Los Angeles.  From the state park we turned left back onto the coastal highway and rode through the long stretch of holiday houses that is Malibu.  We had lunch on Malibu pier overlooking the bay with quite a few surfers and paddleboarders in the water Read More...

Cycling Day 51 – Ventura to Leo Carillo

We decided to make the most of the hotel facilities before heading off to Leo Carrillo State Beach, popping in for a quick soak in the outdoor hot tub. Although the Country Inn and Suites was cheap it was surprisingly nice. We are a little head of schedule at the moment so we’re not doing as longer days as we were earlier in the trip. This combined with the generally Read More...

Cycling Day 50 – Carpenteria to Ventura

Today we had a really short ride as I needed to pick up my bank card in Ventura and the post office wasn’t open today, meaning we’ll have to leave in the morning and pick it up on the way out.  As the local state park was closed due to flooding, we were due to stay in a motel so we didn’t leave until just after midday having taken advantage of the Read More...

Video Blog 007 – Port Orford

We were at the end of our first really long ride here and thought the bay looked pretty special so we thought we’d capture a bit of the trip on the GoPro.  This video is quite late – we’ve been struggling to find somewhere to upload it.

Cycling Day 49 – Goleta To Carpenteria

We had quite a late start today after some drunken frivolity last night.  As we were packing up, two fathers from the nearby boy scout troupe came over to set up a tent and had a chat.  We got along quite well and one of them kindly offered us a place to stay in their guesthouse in L.A. somewhere near Santa Monica and Venice.  When we finally got away from Read More...

Cycling Day 48 – Lompoc to Goleta

Today was the last of nine consecutive days cycling we had planned since San Francisco which gave us a bit more breathing room on our target date for San Diego.  There was pretty much nothing on the map between Lompoc and our destination for the evening, El Capitan State Beach near Goleta.  Knowing this, we stocked up on two days of food and water at Von’s supermarket before heading out Read More...
