Cycling Day 83 – Dinh Van to Dalat

Feeling surprisingly fresh after yesterdays epic day, we headed out of Dinh Van and were soon into the climb up to Dalat.  There were a couple of different roads up to Dalat but we’d decided to come in from the west and then leave on a different road after our New Year celebrations. We’d planned our rides over the last week so that we could bring in 2014 at 1500m. The gradient varied between 3 and Read More...

Cycling Day 82 – Lien Son to Dinh Van

Today was a day we had been somewhat saving ourselves for, with a rest day and a fairly straightforward day leading up to it.  From looking at other people’s elevation profiles and maps, we had seen that the route was not only over 100km long, but had several long sustained climbs to make things even harder.  Our original plan had us splitting the day up by staying in the amusingly Read More...

Cycling Day 81 – Boun Ma Thout to Lien Son

With tomorrows monster day from Lien Son to Dinh Van at the back of our minds, we set ourselves an easy target today. Lien Son is only 50k away from Boun Ma Thout so we were in no rush. However, as we grabbed our bikes from hotel security Sam soon realised his back tyre was flat again. This delayed us slightly as Sam hunted for the cause – a metal nail was Read More...

Cycling Day 80 – Ea Drang to Buon Ma Thuot

Feeling pretty good about yesterday’s long ride, we were ready for another good session today to Buon Ma Thout about 80km to the south.  We had a bit of a delay in the morning as I played around with the GoPro mounting on the front of my bike.  The inconsistent road surface has been playing havoc with the little extension arms that lift the camera over the handlebars, with almost Read More...

Cycling Day 79 – Pleiku to Ea Drang

Ho ho ho, Merry Christmas. Waking up on Christmas day to go on a bike ride was pretty unusual but it turned out to be a great day. Last night Sam was on the hunt for some local cuisine and bumped into a local called Vu (surname Ho rather fittingly :D). Sam and Vu got chatting about cycle touring and it turns out it’s something Vu has always wanted to do. We arranged to meet up for breakfast, talk cycling and let Vu show us Read More...

Hunting For Food

I’ve really been looking forward to the food through this region with many local specialties that are hard to find elsewhere.  In the more rural parts of Vietnam we run into the problems of either restaurants always serving exactly the same thing (noodle soup, fried noodles or rice) or us not being able to find the really good places with some more diverse food.  In doing some research, I had Read More...

Cycling Day 78 – Kon Tum to Pleiku

Today was a relatively short ride into Pleiku which wasn’t the greatest day from my perspective.  We started off from the Konklor hotel which was a newly established hotel on the outskirts of Kon Tum with a focus on bringing the benefits of tourism to the minority people of Kon K’lor.  We took a short walk around the village last night and met a few locals.  We were surprised to Read More...

Cycling Day 77 – Plei Can to Kon Tum

Today was a fairly straightforward ride in theory but some unexpected strong winds and fierce sunshine made things a little tougher. Also since leaving Hoi An, I’ve noticed that my stomach has been growling and my energy levels are a little inconsistent throughout the day. Although i’m not certain of the cause I suspect the limited eating in the evening and during rides, hasn’t helped. As you can imagine cycling Read More...
