Cycling Day 83 – Dinh Van to Dalat

Sandy climb up to the top

Sandy climb up to the top

Feeling surprisingly fresh after yesterdays epic day, we headed out of Dinh Van and were soon into the climb up to Dalat.  There were a couple of different roads up to Dalat but we’d decided to come in from the west and then leave on a different road after our New Year celebrations. We’d planned our rides over the last week so that we could bring in 2014 at 1500m.

The gradient varied between 3 and 10% over the 700m climb. The climb was pretty continuous all the way up to Dalat and there were some major roadworks for most of it. This made some of the sections a little technical but it was actually quite a handy distraction. As we climbed higher and higher the views were spectacular (though we were so busy climbing we forgot to take pictures). We got plenty of thumbs up, hellos and waves as we got nearer the top.

The climb peaked at about 1550m and then we had the short ride into town. At this point I felt pretty euphoric to be honest, I’d always thought the climb up to Dalat would be the hardest part of the Vietnam leg. Though I know we have more rides to go it feels like we’re on the home straight now. We’ve got 3 nights in Dalat to rest and bring in the New Year.
